What is GLB?

The UN has published 17 sustainable development goals, stating

‘’ The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.’’

The GLB courses have been designed by adopting these goals as an application of the AGU’s innovation to achieve AGU Socio-Technical University Project (http://www.agu.edu.tr/userfiles/up/AGU%20Socio-Technical%20University%20project%20-%20Report.pdf)

In this context, GLBs are a curriculum where AGU students carry out projects with deep knowledge about SDGs. An AGU student takes these courses as a compulsory course every year. Students take GLB 101 and GLB 104 courses in the first year, GLB 2XX courses in the second year and GLB 300 course in the third year. In the GLB 101 and GLB 104 courses taken in the first year, SDGs and their sub-goals are presented as course content. The 2XX courses taken in the second year include specialized topics for each SDG. The GLB 300 course given in the third year aims to implement the GLB courses taken in the first and second years in the field and to develop projects for the SDGs. More than 50% of AGU instructors work in these courses each year. In addition, since the aim is interdisciplinary study, the course classes consist of students from different departments and enable them to develop projects together.
